The Sunyani Traditional Council (STC) has announced a permanent ban on the practice of laying dead bodies or corpses in open spaces within the traditional area. The directive, according to the Council, prohibits the display of bodies on streets, access roads, school parks, or any other public areas.
Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Sunyani, Odeefuo Ogyeamanfo Boahen Korkor II, the Akwamuhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio, explained that the decision was taken to preserve public decency, promote hygiene, and uphold traditional respect for the dead. He cautioned that anyone who flouts the directive will bear the consequences individually, as the Council will not condone acts that disrespect community norms.
Nana Ababio further advised non-indigenous residents to align themselves with the Gyaase clan to facilitate proper arrangements for laying bodies in state. He said this measure would ensure that funerals and other rites are conducted in an orderly and culturally acceptable manner.
In addition, the Traditional Council has reinforced its long-standing prohibition against farming on Fridays within the Sunyani Traditional Area. The Akwamuhene stated that the day is reserved for traditional observances and community rest, warning that anyone who engages in farming on Fridays does so at their own risk.
He emphasized that these directives are part of efforts to safeguard Sunyani’s cultural heritage and maintain harmony between residents and traditional authorities.
