The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Governs Kwame Agbodza, has given firm assurance that government is taking concrete steps to return the contractor to site on the Agona Swedru–Ehyiem road project in the Central Region. The project, which has been on hold for several months, has become a major concern for residents and commuters who rely heavily on the route for economic and social activities.
Speaking during an engagement with stakeholders, Hon. Agbodza explained that the rehabilitation works, awarded on April 1, 2024, were initially progressing steadily before funding challenges halted the project. The contract was expected to cover 22.5 kilometres of road and was scheduled for completion by October 1, 2025.
“We are fully aware of the importance of this road to the people of Agona Swedru, Ehyiem, and the surrounding communities,” the Minister said. “The suspension of work was purely due to funding constraints, but I want to assure the public that we are taking the necessary steps to resolve this and get the contractor back to site as soon as possible.”
Hon. Agbodza noted that restoring the project to active status remains a top priority for the Ministry. According to him, efforts are underway at various levels of government to secure the needed resources to ensure that work resumes without further delay.
“The Ministry is committed to ensuring continuity of all critical road projects, and the Agona Swedru–Ehyiem road is no exception. We are working closely with the relevant agencies to sort out the financial issues. Once that is done, the contractor will return to site immediately,” he added.
The Minister also revealed that the Ehyiem–Akroso section, which forms part of the overall road network earmarked for improvement, will soon be addressed under a separate contract. This portion of the road network spans approximately 47.9 kilometres and is expected to significantly enhance transportation within the larger corridor once completed.
“We have not abandoned any part of this road. The Ehyiem–Akroso stretch is also important, and it will be awarded in due course. Our goal is to improve accessibility, promote economic activity, and ensure safer travel for the people of the Central Region,” Hon. Agbodza emphasized.
