The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has issued a stern warning to all accredited health facilities to desist from charging patients with valid NHIS cards for services already covered under the scheme.

Speaking at the launch of the Market Storm and My NHIS App Sensation in the Ashanti Region, the Regional Director of NHIS, Mohammed Muniru, said the new digital initiative was designed to make it easier for traders, entrepreneurs, and other busy individuals to register and renew their NHIS membership conveniently using their mobile phones.

Mr. Muniru expressed concern about the increasing number of complaints from cardholders who report being asked to pay out-of-pocket for services that are fully covered by the NHIS. He described such practices as unlawful and exploitative, stressing that the scheme exists to protect citizens from financial hardship in accessing healthcare.

He urged affected members of the public to promptly report any such incidents to the nearest NHIS office for immediate investigation and redress.

“The NHIS will continue to closely monitor all accredited health facilities to ensure compliance with our legal framework and contractual obligations,” Mr. Muniru stated. He warned that facilities found violating the rules risk sanctions, suspension, or withdrawal of accreditation.

He reaffirmed the NHIS’s commitment to ensuring accessible, affordable, and transparent healthcare for all Ghanaians.
