Minority Demands Reversal of Lithium Royalty Reduction, Accuses Majority of Double Standards

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Committee on Lands and Natural Resources is calling for the government to immediately reverse the lithium royalty rate in the Láthiven Agreement with Barari DV Ghana Ltd from 5 percent back to 10 percent. The 10 percent rate, they say, was originally agreed upon by the 8th Parliament under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Speaking at a press briefing, the MP for Mampong and Ranking Member of the Committee, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, accused the current Majority Caucus (NDC) of “double standards and hypocrisy.” He argued that the NDC, then in opposition, had vehemently rejected the 10 percent royalty negotiated by the former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor.

Sarpong noted that this same NDC has now approved a reduced rate of 5 percent under its own government, a move he described as contradictory and detrimental to Ghana’s mineral revenue potential.

The Minority insists that restoring the 10 percent royalty is necessary to ensure the nation secures a fair share of its lithium resources, and has urged the government to reconsider the newly approved terms.
