President John Dramani Mahama has once again reiterated Ghana’s call for Africa to be given two permanent seats at the United Nations Security Council.
Addressing the media after a closed-door meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Africa’s representation in global governance, President Mahama emphasized Ghana’s continued support for Africa’s long-standing and legitimate demand for permanent representation on the UN Security Council.
He stated that Africa, with its 54 countries and population of over one billion people, remains the only inhabited continent without a permanent seat on the world’s most powerful decision-making body. This, he said, is a historical injustice that must be corrected. Citing the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration, President Mahama stressed that Africa’s position is clear — the continent deserves at least two permanent seats with veto power, along with additional non-permanent seats.
President Mahama commended President Steinmeier and the German government for their principled support and urged all nations to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to make the Security Council more representative, democratic, and legitimate.
He noted that in President Steinmeier, Ghana has found not only a partner but also a friend who recognizes that Africa’s development is essential to global peace and prosperity, and that true partnership must be grounded in equality, mutual respect, and shared benefits.
