President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Vegetable Development Project under the Feed Ghana Initiative at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region, describing it as a major milestone in strengthening the country’s food security and expanding irrigation infrastructure.
Speaking to farmers, traditional leaders, and project partners, President Mahama announced that the initiative will include the construction of a modern packhouse equipped for grading, sorting, packaging, and cold-chain management. The facility is expected to improve post-harvest handling and enhance the market readiness of vegetables produced under the project.
He further revealed that the project has been designed for completion within 12 months, adding that government plans to replicate the model across the country particularly in the northern regions, where farmers continue to face severe water shortages during the dry season.
Highlighting the project’s potential impact on employment, President Mahama said a strengthened vegetable sector could significantly expand job opportunities. He emphasized that the government is laying the groundwork for a 24-hour agricultural economy aimed at absorbing the growing labour force while promoting sustainable national development.
