The Majority Caucus in Parliament has called on Speaker Alban Bagbin to declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant following a ruling by the Tamale High Court that annulled the constituency’s 2024 parliamentary election results.
According to the Majority, the incumbent MP, Matthew Nyindam, must immediately step aside and halt participation in all parliamentary proceedings until a rerun of the election is conducted. They argue that both Parliament and the MP have been duly served with the court’s directive ordering a fresh poll after a legal challenge to the 2024 outcome.
Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, insisted that allowing Mr. Nyindam to continue taking part in parliamentary business undermines the authority of the court and violates established parliamentary precedent.
However, Minority Leader, Hon. Alex Afenyo-Markin, strongly disagreed with the Majority’s position. He maintained that the embattled MP has filed a stay of execution against the High Court’s ruling, granting him full legal authority to continue attending Parliament and participating in all proceedings.
Ruling on the matter, Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin dismissed the application by the Majority Whip to bar Matthew Nyindam from parliamentary business, despite the Tamale High Court’s decision annulling the 2024 Kpandai parliamentary election.
