A community elder at Sefwi Afereh, Abusuapanyin Nana Kwadwo Nkrumah, has accused the Western North Regional Minister, Hon. Wilbert Petty Brentum, of allegedly supporting illegal mining activities in the area.
According to him, the regional minister has allowed some illegal miners to operate near a community dam that serves as the main source of water for about 1,000 residents. He expressed worry that the dam, which has provided clean water to the people for years, could be destroyed by such operations.
His comments follow his bold decision to stop the miners from operating in the area — an action he says has now made him a target. Abusuapanyin Nkrumah revealed that since confronting the miners, he has been forced to go into hiding because of alleged attempts to arrest him.
Speaking in an interview with newseyegh.com, he stressed that Sefwi Afereh is a predominantly rice-growing community, and the introduction of illegal mining could have devastating effects on both agriculture and the local water supply.
“I don’t understand why the regional minister would allow such operations to take place here. This dam has served our people for years,” he stated.
