Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party delegates to uphold the NPP’s long-standing tradition of supporting repeat presidential candidates—a strategy he says has consistently led the party to victory.
Addressing delegates in the Western North Region during his campaign tour, which took him to Sefwi Akontombra, Aowin, and Suaman constituencies, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the NPP’s history demonstrates how perseverance and loyalty yield electoral success. He noted that it is uncommon for any candidate to win the presidency on their first attempt.
Citing examples, he recalled that the party’s first presidential candidate, Professor Adu-Boahen, did not win in 1992, but former President John Agyekum Kufuor succeeded in 2000 after losing in 1996. Similarly, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo triumphed only after his third bid for the presidency. These, Dr. Bawumia said, prove that persistence pays off in politics.
He therefore appealed to delegates to follow that proven path by entrusting him with the party’s leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections. Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the NPP’s vision of development, progress, and prosperity for all Ghanaians.
