The Director of Currency at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Mr. Dominic Owusu, has reaffirmed that all coins issued by the central bank, including the 20-pesewa coin, remain legal tender and must be accepted for all transactions across the country.

Speaking in an interview with newseyegh.com, Mr. Owusu emphasized that the Bank of Ghana is the only institution with the legal mandate to issue and withdraw currency from circulation. He stated that all coins released by the BoG are valid for trade and payment purposes and should not be rejected under any circumstance.

His comments come amid growing public complaints that some traders and vendors are refusing to accept the 20-pesewa coin during purchases.

Mr. Owusu cautioned that it is against the law for any Ghanaian to reject coins issued by the Bank of Ghana, stressing that such actions undermine public confidence in the nation’s currency. He added that the BoG will continue to ensure stability in the country’s monetary system by maintaining the circulation of both coins and notes.

He further explained that coins, particularly the 20-pesewa denomination, play a vital role in the economy by facilitating small-scale transactions and serving as change in everyday trade.

Mr. Owusu, therefore, urged business owners, transport operators, and the general public to accept all coins as legitimate currency, reminding them that every denomination issued by the Bank of Ghana remains legal tender across the country.
